Allen Design Build undertakes residential and small-scale commercial projects in Telluride and the surrounding communities. Allen Design’s mountain-modern architecture brings your concept to stunning life crafted of wood, stone, glass, and timber with strong attention to environment and conditions. All Allen Design Build projects take into consideration the surrounding land’s natural elements — views, sunlight, topography, prevailing winds, plants, and trees — and base the design and build process around complementing and highlighting those features, as the connections between humans and nature promote physical and mental well being.

Matt’s goal is to design and build homes that fit you as an individual, the site of your project, and the surrounding land.
Design
Matt meets you at the building site to discuss desirable natural features that you may wish to accentuate, the benefits and challenges of your site’s unique topography, and your general taste in architecture styles.
Matt then works with you to develop a program that outlines your desires for your home. This includes big decisions, like the number of rooms and proximity to one another, and smaller details, such as desired interior features and finishes.
Build
Allen Design Build provides both experience-driven general contracting and high-quality carpentry and woodworking services, eliminating the need to subcontract for some critical roles and passing the associated time and cost savings on to clients. With an intimate understanding of practical framing techniques and decades of experience implementing them himself, Matt’s general contracting services are uniquely grounded by realistic expectations.
Matt is personally present at the job site each workday, maintaining a thorough understanding of your project’s status and proactively managing any issues that arise. Matt only works with 1-2 clients at a time, allowing him to focus his full attention on your project.
Matt also offers Owner’s Rep Services to ensure the owner’s best interests are being followed. These range from locally representing owner’s interests whom have hired an out of state architect to offering information and guidance to owner-builders who may not have adequate levels of construction experience themselves.
Design + Build
As both an architect and builder, Matt has the expertise of two professionals rolled into one. His knowledge of design, land use codes, building codes, and construction experience makes him unique in his field. Trust Allen Design Build to provide a holistic viewpoint and experience based guidance through the entire design/build process, from concept through completion.
About Matt
Matthew Allen grew up in Sonoma County, California. He was raised in a family with deep appreciation for nature, design, and craftsmanship.
Matt began working professionally as a carpenter to support himself while studying Environmental Design at the University of Colorado Boulder. After graduating with his degree in 1987, he moved to the yet-undeveloped ski town of Telluride. Though many of the structures were boarded up with plywood, he found inspiration in the quaint, well-preserved Victorian homes set against the stunning background of the San Juans. With his work through Allen Design Build, Matt aims to support local traditions of architectural excellence, community engagement and regard for the natural world.
